Of the many people injured at the insane shooting of Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords, the most tragic story was that of Christina Taylor Green, a nine-year-old girl and innocent bystander who was shot and killed by Jared Lee Loughner, the accused wannabe assassin. That tragic death is garnering national attention, and unfortunately, national attention means the Westboro Baptist Church will be showing up to do their standard anti-gay, anti-America protest. Fortunately, a flight of “angels” will be showing up to protect Christina Taylor Green’s funeral from Westboro Baptist.
“For something like this to happen in Tucson was a really big shock to us all,” said Christin Gilmer, who is organizing the anti-protest angel squad. “Our nightmare happened when we saw Westboro Baptist Church was going to picket the funerals. We want to surround them, in a nonviolent way, to say that our community is united. We’re a peaceful haven. You don’t mess with Tucson.”
The plan is to drown out the hateful signs and screeching of the Westboro Baptist people with a brigade of angels, each volunteer wearing 8×10 angel wings made by volunteers. The wings are large enough that only a few angels are needed to completely shield those attending the funeral from the offensiveness that is Westboro’s stock in trade. The angel wings counter-protest was thought up by Colorado native Romaine Patterson in 1999.
