China’s long-rumored J-20 stealth fighter jet has had the world buzzing since December, with shots of the craft recently leaking online. Well, that rumored fighter is the truth. China took the J-20 stealth fighter out for a test flight while US Defense Secretary Robert Gates was visiting the country. If that’s not a shot across America’s bow, I’ve never seen one. Gates doesn’t agree, taking the word of a dictator over the word of common sense.
“I asked President Hu (Jintao) about it directly, and he said that the test had absolutely nothing to do with my visit and had been a pre-planned test. And that’s where we left it.” Gates added, “I take President Hu at his word that … the test had nothing to do with my visit.”
Chinese military experts have their doubts. “It was planned this way, a classic exercise in power projection,” said Chinese military expert Richard Fisher. “They want President Obama and the new Congress to view Hu Jintao, who visits next week, as the leader of the next military superpower, whose demands must be accommodated.”
