While on his way from his bus stop to his home in Rakkestad, Norway, middle-schooler Walter Eikrem had the kind of encounter that no one ever wants. He rounded the corner and came face to face with a pack of wolves in the distance. Fortunately for young Walter, he had a plan. A plan and a mobile phone overloaded with crappy music. Rather than run from the wolves, 13-year-old Walter Eikrem scared off the pack of wolves by yelling as loud as he could and cranking the song “Overcome” by Creed. The wolves, appalled by his bad taste in music, wandered away, leaving Walter shamed but alive.
“At first, I thought it might have been the neighbor’s dogs,” said Walter. “I was afraid they would attack me. The worst thing you can do is run away because doing so just invites the wolves to chase you down, but I was so afraid that I couldn’t even run away if I’d wanted to.” When he cranked his terrible music, Walter says the wolves “didn’t really get scared, they just turned around and simply trotted away.”
Fortunately for Walter, wolves are also perceptive musical critics. When they heard the strains of Creed and Walter’s enthusiastic shouting, they turned their heads and left. They didn’t run away like they were afraid because they were disgusted! Once again, an MP3 player has saved someone’s life.
For the record, “Overcome” is the first song on Creed’s 2009 album Full Circle, just in case you’ve got a wolf problem in your backyard and you want to run them off.
