Oprah’s Half-Sister

Posted 1/25/2011 7:30 am by

The big news on Monday was not related to anything that happened in the actual news.  No, the biggest news was a billionaire’s long-lost family was discovered.  Television magnate Oprah Winfrey has been busy launching her new network, but not so busy she couldn’t dig into her family tree.  As it turns out, Oprah has a half-sister named Patricia Lloyd via her mother’s side of the family tree.  Oprah discovered about her half-sister shortly after sending her entire audience to Australia.

“Family business should be handled by family,” said Patricia Lloyd, who has known about her Oprah connection since 2007 but has failed to get into contact with Winfrey until now.  ”It couldn’t be handled by anyone else.  That’s not fair.  It wouldn’t be fair to you.”

Well, the sisters are reunited now after many years of separation.  Oprah Winfrey’s mother, Vernita Lee, gave the baby daughter that would become Patricia up for adoption when Oprah was 9 years old and living with her father.  Lloyd, who grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, had given up hope on finding her blood relatives until her grown children urged her to resume searching.  The next thing you know, ol’ Patricia Lloyd’s sister is a billionaire with her own TV network.  Not a bad pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!
