In last year’s World Communications Address, Pope Benedict urged Catholics to become more proactive about embracing new media and using new technology to reach out to their fellow man. Little did he know that Little iApps, a three-man app development team, would take those words to heart and create the world’s first church-approved confession app for the iPad and iPhone. The app is called Confession: A Roman Catholic App, and it allows users to confess their sins and receive penitence with their smart phones or tablet computers. Unless you gave up your computer for Lent, that is.
For those worried it’s not exact, Confession takes into account the user’s age, sex, vocation, and time elapsed from their last confession. For those worried it might leak their dirty little secrets, Confession is password protected and requires a username to access. For those worried about their souls, Confession has received an imprimatur (an official endorsement from a church official) from Bishop Kevin Rhoades.
“Our bishop was very excited about it,” said Patrick Leinen, one of the three men who designed the app. ”We were able to work with several priests in order to get that examination of conscience created, so it was kind of fun. When we were actually testing out the software before release we had one gentleman who hadn’t been to confession in about 20 years. He went in and did his confession with it and he said it made it much easier on him.”
