During her 20-week checkup, Donna Sayer and partner Simon Briscoe got some warnings about the health of their child. Apparently, doctors thought his head was too elongated and small, which might indicate some abnormalities. So the couple waited two weeks, worried sick, before heading back to Canterbury Hospital for a second round of ultrasound tests. As it turns out, their baby was okay; the baby was caught on the ultrasound machine giving his parents a thumbs up as if to reassure them!
“After checking everything was okay the nurse said she would try to get some more photographs of the baby but it was hiding and all she could get was its hand giving the thumbs-up, as if it was trying to tell us that everything was fine. The image was quite clear,” added mother to be Donna Sayer, 29, from Whitstable, Kent. “We had both been concerned during the two weeks before I had the third scan but everything is okay. We have shown the photograph to family and friends and they all think it is quite apt.”
Babies are tougher than we give them credit for. Babies have survived tornadoes and 8-story falls, so I imagine the parents were worried for nothing. Still, medical personnel like Fay Smith, who gave the ultrasound in question, have caught babies doing all kinds of funny things in the womb.
“You see them sucking their thumbs, doing rude gestures, and in later scans blinking,’ said the ultrasound practitioner. “I often laugh with parents-to-be when babies have got their hands over their private parts.”
