Talk about harshing someone’s buzz, man. John Powell and Lucy Walton help Ms. Walton’s mother run the family farm and bed and breakfast in Crook in South Lakeland, Cumbria, along beautiful Lake Windermere. Well, normally beautiful Lake Windermere, anyway; as it turns out, the Walton farm is a haven for troublesome locals who leave litter laying everywhere, drive through the fields, cause damage, and generally behave inappropriately at all times. Fed up with it all, when Lucy Walton saw some partiers invade their land again she came up with a plan: Lucy told her boyfriend John Powell to dress up like an axe murderer and the two would scare the teenagers off their land by faking a murder.
The plan worked all right. Perhaps a little too well! The teens were so petrified by the sight of a ketchup-smeared Ms. Walton running in terror from her ax-wielding fiancé that they ran away from the farm and straight to police. When the cops showed up, they didn’t turn on the trespassers, but the couple who scared them. John was arrested and dragged off to court, where he was booked on two charges of possessing an axe in a public place and using behavior likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress. The couple has had to cancel their upcoming wedding and honeymoon while John waits around to fight the charges in court.
“We were just trying to teach them a lesson – there’s no way they could have been seriously frightened,” said the 28-year-old Powell. “They said I tapped on the car window with the axe – well if I had done, it would have been smashed, it’s such a big axe. It was just a practical joke but now it’s ripped our lives apart.”
