Europe, after two world wars and countless other battles and skirmishes, is often uncovering WWII-era grenades and mines. Occasionally, these discoveries are dangerous to nearby people, most of whom had no idea they were living next door to an active piece of killing ordinance. Builders uncovered at 1,000-pound bomb on Renault-owned land outside Paris, which prompted the evacuation of 6,000 nearby residents. unlucky folks living over the bomb were given free passes to the movies while police bomb squad experts worked to disarm the monster bomb.
“People were asked to leave their homes at dawn this morning because the bomb was considered live and dangerous,” said a local police spokesman. “It was found by builders on land which was heavily bombed during the Second World War. Homes which fall within a four hundred meter radius of the bomb have been evacuated.”
The Renault factory is located in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt. During WWII, a massive air assault pummeled Paris, hitting relatively unprotected factories and suburbs while leaving the densely-packed city center relatively unharmed. At the time, it was a marvel for its lack of civilian deaths; I imagine none of the fliers involved would think that nearly 70 years after the attacks, those bombs still pose a danger.
