Longtime PopFi readers will remember the story of Thorpe Park. Thorpe Park is a theme park in Chertsey, Surry, in the UK, that features a lot of strange attractions. For example, Thorpe Park’s Saw roller coaster and horror maze collected visitor urine for a smell stunt. Now, apparently, Thorpe Park’s latest ride has to be moved after disturbing a graveyard from 666AD.
The ride, a 65-foot water ride called Storm Surge, was originally planned for an area of the park known as Monk’s Walk. As it turns out, that area used to be a graveyard for monks who lived in the now-ruined Chertsey Abbey. The path connects Chertsey Abbey to Thorpe Church. As it turns out, the ride was going to be built on an ancient graveyard. What a weird, weird theme park.
“It became apparent that something strange was going on when teams started clearing Storm Surge’s initial site,” said Mike Vallis, divisional director for Thorpe Park. “Staff reports of eerie goings-on shot up and the only physical change in the park, at that time, was the beginning of ground preparation work for the new ride. As employees were getting freaked out, we decided to call on an expert to see whether there was anything to report but had no idea of the dramatic effects.”
