Director David Ellis is well-known for his willingness to do something (anything) in the attempt to get publicity for his movie. After all, Ellis directed the notorious Snakes On A Plane, which famously added cursing and new kill scenes to cater to the Internet audience that latched onto the title and the film’s star, Samuel L. Jackson. Snakes on a Plane wasn’t the film’s title, just a description, but everyone loved it and it became the official name. Ellis has a new movie in the works, and it’s going to be a fun one if he gets his way. David Ellis wants to call his new movie Untitled 3D Shark Thriller.
The film has been sold internationally under the title Shark Night 3D, but in America? There is no title. Not yet, at least. The studio is actively pushing for a different title, but David Ellis loves the idea of Untitled 3D Shark Thriller and he’s digging his heels in to get the movie approved with that title.
“I hated the original title [Shark Night 3D], too,” said Ellis to New York Magazine, “so at our weekly production meetings, I made everyone on the crew come up with names—Chums, Fins, Terror on the Lake—but they all seemed kind of cheesy. And so until I hear a better name, I like what we’ve got right now: Untitled 3D Shark Thriller. The title says everything you need to know: ‘We’ve got sharks.’ ‘It’s in 3D.’ and, ‘It’s a thriller.’ ”
