The cassette had a good run as a form of media, but now it’s just another piece of scrap on the scrap heap of history. In October, Sony killed the cassette Walkman after a 25-year run. The writing was on the wall. According to Mental Floss, 2011 will be the first year where no car has a cassette deck option from the factory. Staggering how quickly technology falls, isn’t it?
Not five years ago, everyone had cassette decks in their cars! Now, they’re getting more and more difficult to find. You have to feel bad for the cassette, as it never really got an era of its own. Records had a long run of success, as did CDs. The 8-Track is so closely identified with the 70’s. But the cassette? Maybe it had the 80’s, but not the entirety of the 80’s, as it was overlapped by both the record, 8-Track, and the CD in turn.
