While kissing in public is a rarity in Thailand, some ambitious Thai couples are locking lips long-term in the beach resort city of Pattaya, Thailand. That’s where organizers have launched an ambitious world record attempt. Couples started kissing at 6 AM local time (6 PM Eastern) with an eye on the record books. Thai couples are trying to break a world record for longest kiss on Valentine’s Day. The previous kissing world record was set in that romantic hotbed of Germany, where a couple kissed for 32 hours, 7 minutes, and 14 seconds.
“These couples, who joined the longest kissing world record, are people who are in love,” said organizer Somporn Narksuetrong. “They want to be part of history by entering this competition to show their love.”
That said, don’t get all verklempt with romance just yet. These couples cannot stop kissing. They can eat and drink and go to the bathroom, but they must maintain a lip lock at all times. Do you really want to kiss someone while they’re using the toilet? Because I sure don’t. Or kiss someone while they suck in a milkshake through a straw? Ugh, no thank you. (If that wasn’t bad enough, a staff member has to follow them into the bathroom to ensure they don’t stop kissing while answering nature’s call.)
