Valentine’s Day is widely touted as the most romantic day of the year. It’s supposed to be a day filled with flowers and candy, cards and sappy love songs—for couples, anyway. So, it probably comes as a surprise to most of us that Valentine’s Day is also a day when divorce inquiries skyrocket.
According to the legal web site Avvo.com, which hosts profiles and ratings for many of the U.S.’s licensed lawyers, the number of couples seeking divorce lawyers and information on ending their marriages sees a significant increase in the days surrounding Valentine’s Day. The founder of the site, Mark Britton, gave a statement claiming that the average increase in requests for divorce lawyers around the day is somewhere around 40 percent, as compared to the previous six months. He also said the number of questions concerning divorce also increased proportionally, jumping by around 36 percent.
Based on these statistics, maybe you should can the chocolates and consider giving your significant other a divorce voucher.
Britton says he believes the increases can be explained by a sort of cabin fever. People wait until after the holidays to file, or they wait until they know what their income situation will be like in the new year. Regardless of the reasoning behind the spikes, it’s certainly sounds like it’s no longer just single people who find themselves bitter during this Hallmark holiday.
