As usual, Eminem lead the way in Grammy nominations, racking up a staggering 10 nods from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Again as usual, Eminem was not the big winner at the Grammys, snagging only two of the ten awards he was up for. The big winners last night were newer acts like Lady Antebellum and The Arcade Fire. The youth movement is in full swing at the Grammys, and the LA Times has the complete list of winners.
Lady Antebellum, a country trio, won five awards. Not only did they sweep the country honors by taking Best Performance With Vocals by a Duo or Group, Best Country Song, and Best Country Album, they also won Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Meanwhile, The Arcade Fire won Album of the Year for The Suburbs, and fittingly, closed the show by playing a second song shortly after playing their first (and only) song of the night in front of a giant, headache-inducing light wall that strobed enough to send a thousand epileptics into fits. Also, other new acts like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber made waves with great performances, even if their award totals were underwhelming.
The music industry is at a weird place right now. The old way of doing things is coming to an end, it seems. The Arcade Fire is on an independent record label, yet won the most important Grammy of them all. Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga are more downloaded than purchased. Still, Lady Antebellum is like the most traditional country act imaginable, and they win more awards than anyone. The record industry isn’t quite sure what to do with these awards, I think.
