They say it’s the dress that won a Prince’s heart, but from the looks of it, it’s more like the dress that won parts significantly more earthy than a heart. The night Prince William and Kate Middleton progressed from friends to a relationship is the night in 2002 that Kate modeled the above dress at a charity clothing auction at St. Andrews University. William was in the audience, and apparently he really liked what the dress didn’t cover enough to ask Kate out. The rest, as they say, is history. Now the knit dress worn by Kate Middleton on the night she and William started dating is up for auction.
“If it is true that my design helped changed the prince’s interest in Kate from platonic to romantic as has been reported, then I am pleased to have played a part — however minor,” said dress designer Charlotte Todd. “I never would have imagined as I sat knitting this piece that one day it would be so important.”
The dress is only a small part of the auction of royal memorabilia to be conducted by Kerry Taylor Auctions at London’s La Galleria. Also up for grabs are two dresses worn by William’s mother, Princess Diana. The dress is expected to fetch upwards of $16,000 US, so bring your pocketbook. Then again, if you already have a life-sized wax William, obviously money is no object when it comes to your desire to have a royal wedding.
