Well, that didn’t last long. In a retail environment that’s terribly unfriendly to brick-and-mortar retailers and especially unfriendly to book stores, Borders has announced that they’re being forced to file for bankruptcy. Borders is expected to close 200 stores, with the option to close 75 more. Ten years ago, Borders was neck-and-neck with chief rival Barnes and Noble; now B&N’s for sale and Borders is cutting back operations.
“It has become increasingly clear that in light of the environment of curtailed customer spending… and the company’s lack of liquidity, Borders Group does not have the capital resources it needs to be a viable competitor,” said a statement issued by Borders Group president Mike Edwards.
If you want to find out if your local Borders is closing, check here for a sortable list of closings. You can always buy books, but I suggest checking the dumpster behind the store once it closes. Borders tends to trash its unsold books, so you might find a goldmine of goodies (or at the very least some shelves and promotional posters and the like).
