The above animal is Larry, a four-year-old tabby. If Larry doesn’t look like he should be big news, that’s because you don’t know Larry’s new exalted position. You see, London has a rat problem, and even the Prime Minister himself isn’t immune to the rats at his Number 10 Downing Street home. So, that requires a solution; Larry the cat has been appointed the Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, an unofficial pest control position in the Cameron Administration.
David Cameron adopted the cat from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. Given Larry’s past life as a street cat and his love of toy mice, it is expected that he’ll perform admirably in his position as the chief mouser for Cameron’s office. Larry will live alongside the PM at his Downing Street residence. The last cat to hold the position, Humphrey, retired in 1997 and died in 2006.
Larry’s care and feeding will be paid for by the PM’s office staff. Either way, he’s still cheaper than hiring a Bangladeshi rat-killing expert. It’s just a shame Lord Voldecat wasn’t available for the position; he could simply Avada Kedavra the mice into the great beyond.
