When 48-year-old Simon Cremer discovered an employee, 40-year-old Mark Gilbert, had been stealing from the small floor fitting business that Cremer owns, he was angry, but more than that, he was hurt. After all, this was obviously a trusted employee, and here he was stealing 845 pounds (roughly $1350) from the company coffers for his own personal gain. So Cremer did what we all would do, he marched Gilbert down to the police station. However, knowing that Gilbert would just get a police caution, Cremer went a little farther and put a sign reading “THIEF. I Stole £845. Am on my way to the police station.” around Gilbert’s neck. This humiliating sign around the neck of a criminal got Simon Cremer a $21000 fine.
Cremer was sued by Gilbert, of course. In order to settle the case out of court, Cremer has to pay Gilbert £5000 in compensation, in addition to picking up £6000 in Gilbert’s legal fees and £2000 of his own legal fees. Maybe next time instead of just humiliating the criminal, you should just beat him with an ax handle. That’s probably cheaper and more satisfying than a simple humiliating sign.
“It is a huge financial burden to have to find this money,” said Cremer, who shows no remorse over his actions. “Do I regret what I did? I don’t know if I do, to be honest, because the police have given Mr Gilbert a caution for the theft which I don’t believe is a just punishment.”
And it is a just punishment. If someone stole $1350 from me, I’d do a whole lot more to them than make them wear a sign that says they’re a thief, that’s for sure.
