For every large lake, there’s a monster. The most famous of these is Nessie, The Loch Ness Monster, but even Russian lakes have (man-eating) monsters. For the folks who live near Lake Windermere, their lake monster has been affectionately dubbed Bownessie, the English Loch Ness Monster. While locals swear they’ve seen her, no one’s gotten a picture of Bownessie until now. A 24-year-old named Tom Pickles captured Bownessie in a picture taken with a camera phone.
Pickles and his companion Sarah Harrington were attending a team building residential training course for IT company CapGemini at Fallbarrow Hall in Bowness, Cumbria, when they decided to paddle out to Belle Island in a kayak. They had gotten about 300 meters (about 328 yards) out into the lake when they spotted the creature zooming through the water. The quick-thinking Pickles grabbed his camera phone and snapped a picture. Here’s the eye-witness’s description of Bownessie:
“It was petrifying and we paddled back to the shore straight away. At first I thought it was a dog and then saw it was much bigger and moving really quickly at about 10mph,” said Pickles. He added, “Its skin was like a seal’s but it’s shape was completely abnormal – it’s not like any animal I’ve ever seen before.”
