Minneapolis, Minnesota, is no place to go topless in February. However, when the Minneapolis Institute of Arts decided to advertise its exhibition of works by Italian master painter Titian, they featured a piece featuring a topless woman called “Venus Rising from the Sea.” A funny graffiti artist decided that a topless woman was too cold in Minnesota and decided to take matters into his or her own hands. A graffiti vandal spray-painted a bikini onto a topless Venus billboard, thereby giving the poor woman some protection from the elements.
“We said ‘We think it’s funny, just leave it, don’t bother replacing it,'” stated museum spokeswoman Anne-Marie Wagener. While the naked Venus has been a bit controversial, Wagener believes the bikini was for comedy’s sake, saying that things might be different, “if the words ‘Brrr!’ weren’t there and they hadn’t given her such a nice, shapely swimsuit. I mean, if you were angry, why would you make it kind of pretty?”
Unfortunately for all involved, Clear Channel (which owns the billboard) had other ideas. Their policy is to replace vandalized billboards so as not to encourage vandalism. Even funny graffiti is frowned upon, so the bikini-clad Venus was replaced.
