In one sweeping movie, Providence, Rhode Island, Mayor Angel Tavares has completely remade the school system by completely dismissing the school system. Last night, the city school board voted 4-3 to approve the move, in which Providence Mayor Angel Tavares fired 2000 teachers and staff from the city school system. One day, everyone’s got jobs. The next day? No one’s got a job, and everyone’s getting a pink slip.
To fire all the teachers seems a bit extreme, but apparently that was the only way for Mayor Tavares to get the budget flexibility he needs to prepare for next year. officials will later determine the actual number of firings, and who gets fired, based on the need to cut a multi-million-dollar budget deficit for the city of Providence. Predictably, teachers aren’t pleased by this, but they don’t have much choice in the matter.
There’s just a thing with Rhode Island. They love to fire entire schools at once, rather than fire individuals. I guess it’s just easier to fire everyone, then rehire the few good teachers you want to keep. The union can’t do anything about it, which defeats the purpose of having a union.
