The tallest skyscraper in Europe, London’s Shard, isn’t finished yet. In fact, workers are still hard at work on the Shard as we speak. However, just because the building isn’t done doesn’t mean a tenant hasn’t moved in. The caged fellow above is Romeo, a juvenile fox who was caught living on the 72nd floor of the tallest skyscraper in Europe.
Foxes are remarkably adaptable to city life, but this is pretty impressive even for a fox. Romeo apparently snuck into the building’s completed portion and went up a central staircase. He ended up on the 72nd floor because that’s where workers were stationed (and that’s where the food was being kept). That’s a staggering 944 feet off the ground! Pest controllers from Southwark Council were dispatched to trap the fox, who is a healthy specimen who just needed a place to stay.
“At first I didn’t believe it was up there, I thought it must be a hoax,” said Southwark pest controller Les Leonard. “I’ve got a fear of heights and getting the hoist lift from the 35th floor to the 72nd was terrifying. On the second day it ran straight past us then scrambled up a 10 foot ladder onto the rafters. It was surreal, we couldn’t believe that a fox could go that high.”
Romeo was later released into a new home by London Bridge.
