"This is my Bible; there are many like it, but this one is mine."

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops, one of the largest and most powerful Catholic organizations in the United States, has a lot of power when they get together and decide to do something.  What they’ve decided to do lately is work on a brand new edition of the world’s most popular text, The Bible, with new translations and improved wording.  The New American Bible 2011 edition is removing the words “booty” and “virgin.”

Of course, booty and virgin aren’t being removed from the Bible completely.  In fact, the two most controversial changes in the new translation of the Bible are only two words getting changed in a pair of specific verses.  In Isaiah 7:14, the word “virgin” is being swapped for “young woman,” because the original Hebrew word may have been mistranslated.  Elsewhere, the word “booty” is being replaced with “spoils” so as to stop kids from giggling during Sunday School.

“We needed a new translation because English is a living language,” said Richard Sklba, a retired auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee and one of the men that worked on the New American Bible.

A total of 50 people, mostly scholars and translators, worked on the New American Bible, which is scheduled to be released on March 9.
