It’s amazing that, 20 years after the beating that kicked off the Los Angeles Riots of 1992, Rodney King is still newsworthy when he gets into trouble. Of course, this time it’s more noteworthy for what didn’t happen than what did happen. Almost 20 years to the day after his famous beating by the LAPD, Rodney King was pulled over and cited for driving without a license in Arcadia, California. He just got a ticket this time, rather than suffering a beating. I bet he’s breathing a sigh of relief today.
Of course, King has been involved in conflict with the law in the years since he rose to national fame while being beaten by a group of police officers lead by Sgt. Stacy Coon and Officer Laurence Powell. King suffered a skull fracture and brain and kidney damage from the beating, where King was hit 56 times with police batons. His videotaped beating and the result of the trials of the officers kick-started a massive three-day riot that caused a billion dollars in damage and ended up causing 55 deaths nationwide.
It’s nice that he got a traffic ticket and not a vicious beating, but seriously… why was he driving without a license anyway, knowing how he’s a magnet for police attention? Wouldn’t you abide by the letter of the law if you got the crap kicked out of you by cops?
