For decades, one of the most flamboyant women in country music was Dolly Parton with her giant wigs, fashion forward attire and her …, well, we’ll leave it at that.
Parton has to scooch over a bit now to make room for Lady Gaga. The outlandish pop star released a new version of her hit “Born This Way” on her web site at midnight Thursday night. The country version of the song has a slower tempo and includes some twangy guitar licks and harmonica riffs.
Will the folks who banned the Dixie Chicks from the air waves for their controversial political stances embrace this new addition to their genre? Will a blatant song about being gay or transgendered ever be heard at the Grand Ole Opry?
Only time will tell, but Gaga isn’t completely new to the country life. She stopped in at the top country-themed gay bar Round-Up Saloon in Dallas, Texas last summer and hung out for a while. Apparently, she used to be a regular performer at the club before she became so big she had college curriculum created around studying her.
She’s already put the original version of “Born This Way” at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts? Can she now conquer the country charts too? Hey, if they’ll let Gwyneth Paltrow into Nashville, anything can happen.
