Once upon a time, Sirius and XM were competitors for your satellite radio dollar, but due to hard times and a lack of profitability on either side, the two former enemies have become fast economic friends to fight off the difficulty that comes with competing against streaming radio online. The Sirius and XM merger was announced in February 2007, but it’s finally gotten around to happening officially. Yesterday, Sirius XM Radio unveiled its new unified channel lineup.
I recently purchased a new car (a Dodge Challenger, if you must know), and one of the perks that came with the car is satellite radio. I have to admit, after having been intensely skeptical about if I’d even use it, I find myself using it as much as possible, every day. In the mornings, I listen to ESPN Radio on the way to work. On the way home at night, I listen to a variety of things. My Sirius XM preset stations range from Frank Sinatra to hard rock to outlaw country and bluegrass, and I’m LOVING it. About the only station I haven’t tried out is Oprah Radio, and that’ll come in time.
One of the good things about the merger? Not only does it mean everything is on every channel (and some new channels were added), my old preset stations are still there after the merger and still on the stations I had programmed in! That’s pretty incredible when you think about it. All the channels changed, and I didn’t have to do anything to keep my listening preferences in place.
