In a sense, it’s easy to understand the mistake. It’s pretty common for ads to be prepared days, even weeks in advance of when they are needed, with editors inserting the right copy appropriately when it is time for the ad to run. Well, a Miami Herald editor is in hot water with both the Herald and Macy’s after an ad mistake. The Miami Herald ran a Macy’s ad congratulating the Miami Heat on their NBA Championship on Monday. In case you missed it, the Dallas Mavericks bested the Heat on Sunday to win the NBA title.
The newspaper has already printed a retraction, but the damage is done. Once you’ve gotten egg on your face, you may as well make a skull scramble, because there’s no getting that stuff off. Just ask South Bend, Indiana’s pubic schools. Everyone thought the Heat were going to win, so it’s understood that the Heat celebratory ads would be made, but to accidentally run them? That’s inexcusable; no matter what the prognosticators might say, a sporting event ain’t over until it’s over.
