Since cars began, it seems as though there’s been a rule. Every 3000 miles, rain or shine, you change your oil. Whether you drive a van, a sports car, or a car that runs on fat, you have to change your oil after 3000 miles. Consider that myth busted. According to Jiffy Lube, the world’s largest oil-change business, you don’t have to change your oil every 3000 miles!
Rather than sticking to the “every 3000 miles” mantra, Jiffy Lube franchisees have access to a computer system that customizes an oil change schedule for drivers, using a combination of factors: manufacturer recommendations, driving habits, and type of driving done. Using that magical alchemy, Jiffy Lube and the customers determine what the best schedule for oil changes would be to get the most out of every drop of oil without compromising engine performance and the health of the car.
“We’re showing them on a screen (what) a manufacturer recommends,” says Jiffy Lube CEO Stu Crum. “Customers are choosing oil-change schedules that indicate they will return regularly.”
According to Jiffy Lube, 47% of customers indicated they had a severe driving schedule, and the average oil change interval is 3,502 miles. While that’s not too different from the old recommendation, that extra 500 miles can make a big difference when it comes to the pocketbook!
