Mmm, ice-cold corn syrup!
One of the dumbest/smartest things a company can do is give stuff away. When you want to get customers in the door and eating, you give away coupons for discounted food, or free appetizers, or something to that effect. For its upcoming corporate birthday today, mini-market chain 7-Eleven has a great idea: free Slurpees. That’s right, 7-Eleven is giving away free Slurpees all day, with absolutely no limit to how many of the sample-sized sugary drinks you want. It might cost them money in cups and Slurpees, but 7-Eleven is confident they’ll make money in the long run. Just ask Starbucks, who routinely gives things away to drive sales.
“You get a taste of it,” says Slurpee senior brand director Laura Gordon, “and you choose to have more.”
Last July, during their annual Slurpee give-away, Slurpee sales were UP 38% over a normal day. That’s not even counting all the extra foot traffic, gas sales, and other snacks bought by people looking to compliment their sugar water with something more substantial.
