While most of the media is buzzing about Hurricane Irene rushing up the East Coast, they – along with mayors and governors – are urging the citizens to evacuate ahead of the storm.
With public transportation in New York City shutting down on Saturday due to the potential water surges flooding the subway tunnels, sensationalist talk has also circulated about the hordes of rats that might rise up out of their subterranean homes to avoid the flood and then roam the streets.
New Yorkers better look out if those rats are anything like the enormous rat killed by Housing Authority worker Jose Rivera. He was sealing a rat hole when the giant rodent rushed out of it. Rivera managed to stab the pest with a pitchfork, but two other huge ones escaped. Think about it. This thing was the size of a human baby.
After looking at the picture, animal experts say it was probably a Gambian pouched rat. Imports of the Gambian rat have been banned since 2003. That rat is so big I don’t think it could sneak into your home via the toilet.
If the anticipated infestation gets too bad, New York may want to call in the Bangladesh farmer who killed more than 83,000 rats in nine months.
