There have been a lot of awesomely strange dogs born in this wonderful world, and Harbor, a black and tan coonhound from Boulder, Colorado, is no exception. Harbor has some pretty unusual features. Coonhounds have long ears, which help them sweep scents up from the ground and into their nose, but Harbor is something different. When he was a puppy, his ears were so long that he would trip over them and slide down the stairs. That’s because Harbor the coonhound is the dog with the world’s longest ears.
Forget taking Harbor to the park, says his owner, Jenifer Wert. “Cars will literally stop in the street to take a closer look and get a picture,” she says of her special pet.
The official measurements for Harbor’s ears by Guinness World Records officials? Harbor’s ears were 12.25 inches (31.1 cm) for the left ear and 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) for the right. While not the longest ever–the record is held by a deceased dog named Trigger from Illinois who had a 13.75 inch (34.9 cm) right ear and a 13.5 inch (34.2 cm) left ear–Harbor’s floppy ears are good enough to land him the title of dog with the world’s largest ears, living edition. He joins such august company as Giant George (the world’s largest dog), Boo Boo (the world’s smallest dog), and Puggy (the dog with the world’s longest tongue).
