Mariano Rivera, looking uncomfortable with the adoration of the fans.
In the ninth inning, with the New York Yankees leading the Minnesota Twins by a score of 6-4, Mariano did to rookie Chris Parmelee what he has done to thousands of baseball players in his career: he struck the rookie out with a cut fastball. Not only was it Rivera’s 42nd save of the year, it was save number 602. Mariano Rivera is now Major League Baseball’s all-time saves leader, and every single save has come while wearing the uniform of the New York Yankees. Trevor Hoffman, he of 601 saves, is now second on the list.
“Oh, my God, for the first time in my career, I’m on the mound alone,” said the publicity-shy Rivera. “It was priceless. I didn’t know it could be like that.” Added the 41-year-old from Panama, “Thank God it’s over, too. Because I was getting a little uncomfortable.”
Strange, isn’t it? Pitching in the ninth inning of the World Series doesn’t bother Rivera, but a little attention and he folds like a metal chair. Still, Mo comes up clutch when it’s important, and that’s what has made him a first-ballot Hall of Famer and a Yankee legend.
