Way back in 2008, a man named Samuel Wurzelbacher became briefly famous, though most people didn’t know his name. Samuel Wurzelbacher goes by Joe, and when Joe the Plumber talked to Barack Obama on the campaign trail, he went from an unknown Toledo small business employee to a conservative icon and a talking point for John McCain. Well, Joe the Plumber has filed to run for the United States Congress.
Not a bad career upgrade from showing the world your gluteal cleft while unclogging drains to activist, writer, public speaker, and now possible politician. Still, it seems weird that the guy would resurface now and gain attention once more; maybe he never finished out his 15 minutes of fame?
The interesting thing for Joe the Plumber is that he may actually have a shot to win, should he get his party’s nomination for the newly redesigned 9th U.S. House district for the state of Ohio. Longtime Representative Marcy Kaptur’s district was merged with Dennis Kucinich’s Cleveland district, which means that two popular Democrats will be facing off against one another in the primary. Should one lose, but run as an independent, that might split the base enough to turn Joe the Plumber into Joe the Representative.
