It’s a staple of any child that was of age in the 1990’s. If you were in middle or high school between 1993 and 1997, you know Beavis and Butt-Head, a pair of slack-jawed morons who chortled and mocked their way through a collection of bad music videos and threadbare plots in which one or the other was beaten or otherwise humiliated in the process of scoring, getting food, or otherwise trying to be cool. Beavis and Butt-Head returned to MTV with an all-new episode last night. How does the show work now that music videos have been replaced with reality TV?
Weirdly, now that most of the music videos have been supplanted by reality TV show clips (from MTV, no less) Beavis and Butt-Head actually seems like it’s gotten smarter and funnier. Yes, Beavis and Butt-Head are stupid, but they’re stupid and self-aware, versus the average reality TV show idiot. The segment in which Beavis and Butt-Head mocked Jersey Shore’s Italian adventure was actually pretty funny, and while the A-plots are as paper-thin as ever, it makes sense that Beavis and Butt-Head would allow a homeless “werewolf” to bite them in pursuit of Twilight-like sexy powers.
It seems like being off the air for 14 years has made the show better, as if creator Mike Judge cares a little more. Either that, or the omnipresent parade of stupid we see on TV has made Judge’s satiric pen even sharper, making Beavis and Butt-Head’s insults and commentary more poignant. Either way, while I may not be a regular viewer of the show from here on out, I was impressed and amused by last night’s episode.
