The St. Louis Cardinals pulled off an improbable comeback – three times – in Game 6 to keep their World Series hopes alive while dashing those of the Texas Rangers and their fans.
Game 6 can bring so many momentum swings. Just ask Bill Buckner and Red Sox fans.
Down to their last strike in the both the 9th and 10th innings, the never-say-die Redbirds erased deficits and forged ties to extend the game. Third baseman and St. Louis native David Freese twice came up with clutch hits – a tying triple in the bottom of the ninth and the game-winning two-run blast to center field in the 11th. In the final crazy Cardinals celebration at home plate, Freese’s jersey was ripped off his body. Even though it is now in tatters, the jersey will be displayed in the Baseball Hall of Fame, along with Freese’s bat.
Freese’s last bash brought about a moment of broadcasting synchronicity. Fox announcer Joe Buck called the home run shot, echoing the call his father Jack Buck made 20 years earlier when Kirby Puckett’s 11th-inning walkoff homer in Game 6 propelled the Minnesota Twins into a Game 7 against the Atlanta Braves. “We will see you tomorrow night.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuAnVlRWf7oFor a team that overcame a 10.5 game deficit at the end of the season just to make the playoffs and then got inspiration from a squirrel that got loose in their stadium during the National League Championship Series, the Cardinals have lived on the brink for a while. Now they have just one game left in their season, win or lose.
Game 7 awaits.
The Rangers will strive to win their first-ever World Series, while the Cardinals seek to claim their 11th title in 2011.
With a 7 p.m. start time tonight, that Texas Rangers fan who is a lawyer won’t have to ask for a continuance in court this season.
