Yesterday, Brett Ratner was removed from the 2012 Academy Awards after some homophobic comments. Not long after that, Oscars host Eddie Murphy also chose to step aside, showing his support for Ratner in the process. Fortunately, Brian Grazer has stepped in as the producer of the Oscars, joining co-producer and director Don Mischer, but there’s still no host. Who is going to host the 84th edition of the Academy Awards? The early front runners are familiar names like Billy Crystal (who has got nothing better to do) and Hugh Jackman to newcomers like Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy of Bridesmaids fame.
My official vote of support goes to the Muppets Oscars campaign, in which people are trying to use the pressure of social media to get The Muppets a collective gig to host the 2012 Oscars. I don’t know if this could actually happen, but like last year’s Betty White to SNL campaign, I hope it does happen and I hope the Oscars people are brave enough to give control of their show over to The Muppets for the night. They can film it at the Muppet Theater, have a musical guest, make it a real variety show, and everyone can wear fart shoes!
