With all the turmoil surrounding the 2012 Academy Awards, there’s no doubt that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was feeling a little uneasy. After all, it’s not often you follow a historically bad telecast with so much drama, losing the producer and star in less than a week. So, the Academy turned to a very familiar face to right the ship. Billy Crystal will be hosting the 84th Academy Awards.
“Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions,” Crystal tweeted Thursday afternoon before adding, “Looking forward to the show.”
The best thing about Billy Crystal taking over as Oscars host is that he doesn’t need a lot of rehearsals. After all, he’s done the show eight times: 1990-1993, 97-98, 2000, and 2004. Hosting in 2012 will bring Crystal to nine appearances all total, trailing only Bob Hope’s staggering 19 hosting appearances between 1940 and 1978. Crystal’s 1998 Academy Awards hosting gig remains the highest-rated Oscars telecast of all time.
