It’s tough to make a movie about toys, be they mach toys or an action version of My Little Pony. Unless you’re doing a flick about creepy toys, adapting a real-world toy line to the big screen is difficult at best. However, the first GI Joe movie–GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra–was a fairly successful attempt. It wasn’t great, but it had its moments and was entertaining when it had to be. The first trailer for GI Joe: Retaliation has been released, and it looks as though it’s going to be significantly better than the first Joe movie, if only because Cobra takes over the United States and the Joes lose their technical and numerical superiority. Plus, The Rock is now involved, and he always makes an action movie better.

Personally, I like the way it looks and I have to admit I’m kind of excited to see how this works out in the hands of John M. Chu, director of Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never 3D concert film.
Here’s the thing that makes me most excited for GI Joe: Retaliation. The script was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the minds behind the brilliant horror comedy Zombieland. If anyone can make a GI Joe movie work, it’s those guys. The fact that you’re adding Dwayne Johnson’s Roadblock and Bruce Willis to Channing Tatum’s Duke and the other survivors from the original GI Joe movie is only adding frosting onto a delicious slice of cake.
