As the runner-up on the seventh season of American Idol, David Archuleta is a household name in a great deal of America. Now, he may soon be coming to your house, but not to sing and dance. David Archuleta is putting showbusiness on hold to become a Mormon missionary. The 20-year-old is going to be taking two years off of music to undertake his mission, which is a duty undertaken by most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
“It’s not because someone told me that I was supposed to do it, not because … I no longer want to do music anymore,” said Archuleta at a concert stop in Salt Lake City. “But it’s because it’s the feeling that I felt that I need to do next in my life. It’s just the same feeling that I’ve always followed, tried to follow in my life.”
Archuleta is currently one of the top-grossing American Idol contestants in the show’s run, so it’s not exactly the best time to take a few years off to preach the word to whoever. After all, you’re leaving a pretty high position, where you have access to audiences of thousands of people, to go door-to-door in a goofy short-sleeved dress shirt and tie while riding a bicycle. You’d think that Archuleta could use his musical fame to spread the word of the Book of Mormon to non-believers. Maybe he’s afraid Iggy Pop will show up at his concert or something.
Maybe that’s his plan; after all, he hasn’t announced any official mission work plans. That seems to be a good use of both his singing talent and his zeal for Mormonism.
