If you’re like most of America, you have your cellular phone via Verizon Wireless. They’re the largest cellular phone provider in the US, and as such, they’re pretty popular. Well, if you need to settle up your $18,000 or $22,000 phone bill, then be prepared to pay a little extra, depending on how you pay. Verizon Wireless is going to add a $2 convenience fee for those that pay online or by phone via credit card starting January 15.
That’s right, kids. If you pay by phone or online via credit card, you get charged; however, you don’t get charged if you pay by electronic check or credit card via Verizon’s AutoPay system (and you don’t get charged for paying with a check or via credit card at your local Verizon Wireless store). Verizon, like everyone else, is trying to push people to automatic payments, hence the penalty if you like to actually scrutinize your cell phone bill and make sure you’re not getting charged for something by mistake (or getting overcharged for something).
However, rather than bribe you to make the switch like AT&T, they’re going to use the stick rather than the carrot, and tack on a useless extra charge to your bill. Unless, of course, you walk into a physical Verizon store to pay your bill, where you can also eyeball the latest phones and possibly upgrade to a more expensive phone package…
