For a lot of people, grazing at the grocery store isn’t unusual. You eat a few grapes, check out the merchandise, and most stores turn a blind eye to it. However, stay away from the pastry case. On November 28, Zach O’Dell picked up a doughnut at Blair’s Market in Powell, Wyoming, and ate it without paying for it. Little did he know the legal trouble he would get into. Zach O’Dell earned a $200 fine for shoplifting a $0.79 doughnut.
According to the terms put forth by the court, O’Dell will pay a $200 fine, $10 in court costs, and $0.79 cents for the doughnut, which means that skipping out on a dollar bill cost him nearly $210. However, if he stays out of trouble, the shoplifting charges will be dropped in 6 months and he will avoid prosecution for his sticky-fingered (literally) crime. If you were dodging a multi-million-dollar doughnut bill, that’s one thing, but a dollar crime? That’s definitely not worth.
Here’s the fun part: O’Dell is a criminal justice major at Northwest College. Well, at least he’s getting an up-close-and-personal look at how the justice system works, albeit from the wrong side.
