Josh Hamilton’s journey from the throes of drug addiction to becoming the 2010 American League MVP is an incredible one. He spent three years out of baseball, using a wide variety of drugs and alcohol, and had nearly killed himself before getting right, getting sober, and eventually making his way back to the game he loves. Of course, he’s had to be extra careful since then; Hamilton gets drug tested three times a week due to multiple violations of baseball’s drug policy and until recently had an accountability partner to keep him sober and make sure he stays out of trouble, but his play has been incredible. However, there’s no such thing as a clean recovery. Josh Hamilton has had a relapse into drinking, as he was caught with alcohol at a bar in Dallas, Texas.
Of course, after the season Hamilton had, most guys would probably tie one on during the off-season. He suffered a freak injury and missed a chunk of the season and earlier in the year, a fan was accidentally killed while going for a ball Hamilton threw into the stands. Just the knowledge that he inadvertently caused someone to die would probably be enough to make anyone, let alone a guilty soul like Hamilton, turn to the dark side. Hamilton has relapsed before, in January 2009 at a bar in Tempe, Arizona.
It’s got to be tough to be sober in an environment like Major League Baseball. After all, there’s been in the clubhouse in a lot of parks and the hectic travel schedule, the stress of playing in front of thousands of people, and the stress of playing for your next multi-million-dollar paycheck has to wear on a guy. Here’s hoping Hamilton’s backsliding was a simple mistake, and not a sign of future binges to come. I root for the guy, and I want to see him playing well.
