In February 2010, millionaire John Goodman was involved in a car crash with Scott Wilson. Two things happened: Goodman escaped unscathed and Scott Wilson was left to drown to death in a canal. Predictably, Wilson’s parents Lila and William Wilson are suing Goodman in court; however, the Wilsons are not able to get their hands on a trust fund Goodman set up for his children. Predictably, this loophole is allowing Goodman to hide more of his money from a settlement, albeit in a very weird way. Multi-millionaire John Goodman has adopted his girlfriend, Heather Ann Hutchins, in an attempt to shield more of his assets from a lawsuit.
According to Goodman’s attorney, Daniel Bachi, the 48-year-old Goodman was upset at the way trust administrators were handling the money for his children, so he had to adopt the 42-year-old Hutchins in an attempt to get the trust administered fairly (she is also paid to be trust administrator, as well as potentially being part of the recipients). It’s creepy to adopt someone you’ve been having sex with for three years, but at least they’re not mother and son.
“However, the court cannot ignore the reality of the practical impact of what Mr. Goodman has now done. (Goodman) has effectively diverted a significant portion of the assets of the children’s trust to a person with whom he is intimately involved at a time when his personal assets are largely at risk in this case,” wrote Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Glenn Kelley, the man overseeing the lawsuit.
