When it comes to the Boston Celtics, there are some big names you think about. Larry Bird, Bill Russell, Bob Cousey, Robert Parrish… they’re all NBA legends. Now there’s another name you can add to that list: Paul Pierce. If you don’t think Pierce is a Celtics legend, just look at his career. More importantly, look who Pierce just passed on the Celtics record books! Paul Pierce has passed Larry Bird to become the Boston Celtics’ second-leading career scorer. For the record, the Celtics beat the Charlotte Bobcats 94-84.
“It was a relief. So much was hanging over me the last couple of days. Just hearing about it and knowing that you’ve got a game to play,” said Pierce, who needed 10 points to pass Bird and who finished the game with 15 points. “Just to be mentioned with him, with this organization, is a great honor.” Pierce also said, “I’m not going to lie. It was hanging over my head too much. You kind of just felt it. It was hard to really ignore it and just focus on the game.”
Longtime Celtic and Hall-of-Famer John Havlicek is the all-time Celtics leader in scoring with a staggering 26,395 points. Pierce is now second on the list, with 21,797 points; Bird now sits at third. Paul Pierce has been a 9-time All Star, won an NBA finals, been a Finals MVP, made other Finals appearances, and even won the 3-point shooting contest at the All Star Game. You can’t say he’s not one of the greatest Celtics of all time given his resume.
