Starbucks is not content to just sell coffee to commuters. Starbucks is a company that is looking to grow beyond its traditional business and diversify its stores with multiple revenue streams, in addition to expanding beyond stores into the grocery market. Starbucks is adding to its alcohol business and its digital distribution platform by moving into the $8 million dollar energy drink market. Starbucks is marketing a green coffee-based energy drink called Starbucks Refreshers that will be in grocery stores soon.
The Refreshers line is technically coffee-based, thanks to green unroasted coffee extract, but it’s also fruit juice. The flavors, like raspberry pomegranate and orange melon, will be fruity in nature, but have a caffeinated kick. The drinks come in 12 ounce containers and are only 60 calories a piece, so 24 ounces of Refresher is about the same as 24 ounces of latte from a calorie standpoint, but it remains to be seen how the Refreshers stack up in terms of caffeine content and energy generation.
