There are a lot of things that pilots can do that can endanger passengers and crew. There are things from simple accidents like coffee spills, to fatigue from long hours and even in-cabin accidents that can put lives at risk when you’re traveling at hundreds of miles an hour, but for the passengers of JetBlue Airways Flight 191, it was the captain’s mental state that caused them to worry. Apparently a JetBlue Airways pilot had a mental breakdown while the plane was in flight.
“They’re going to take us down. They’re taking us down. They’re going to take us down. Say the Lord’s prayer. Say the Lord’s prayer,” the captain reportedly said while ranting about Al Quaeda, Iraq, Afghanistan, and bombs on board the plane.
The trip was a fairly routine one from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York to Los Angeles. After his breakdown, the pilot was marched from the cockpit by the flight crew and locked out by the copilot. When the captain broke away from his retainers and tried to get back into the cockpit, passengers were forced to tackle him until the plane could make an emergency landing at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport in Amarillo, Texas.
