Ubaldo Jimenez beaned Troy Tulowitzki, then tried to start a fight.
It’s only spring, but the boys of summer are already starting to heat up. After an acrimonious divorce from the hated Indians, former Cleveland Indian Ubaldo Jimenez ended up with the Colorado Rockies. Before he left Cleveland, Jimenez had very public and very nasty arguments with teammate Troy Tulowitzki. Tulo and fellow teammate Carlos Gonzales got nice big contract extensions, but Jimenez did not, thus the fighting. When Ubaldo Jimenez met Troy Tulowitzki in spring training, the results were not pleasant, as Jimenez hit Tulowitzki with a fastball right in the elbow.
How did Indians manager Jim Tracy dub the event? Tracy called the spring bean, “the most gutless act I’ve seen in 35 years in pro ball. I have lost all respect for (Jimenez).”
Jimenez will probably be suspended once the regular season starts. After all, not only did he bean someone in the elbow… someone with whom Jimenez has had disagreements in the past… he also did it in front of Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig, who was sitting in the owner’s box with Rockies owners Dick and Charlie Monfort. Being a hothead is one thing, but breaking the rules right in front of the man who enforces the rules? That’s a bad idea.
