Last night, Russell Brand played host to a filled auditorium of Hollywood’s brightest young stars in Los Angeles. The event wasn’t Brand’s search for his next pop-star wife, but an awards ceremony. The 2012 MTV Movie Awards, which promised to include the inevitable triple franchise show-down between Twilight, Harry Potter, and The Hunger Games. In some ways, it’s a passing of the pop culture torch from Potter, which wrapped up its film series and thus its relevance, and Twilight, which will be releasing its last movie this year, to The Hunger Games, which just released its first movie and claimed the hearts and minds of America’s tweens and women. Here’s the full list of winners.
Never underestimate the power of a franchise. While The Hunger Games became a sensation this year and propelled Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence to multiple MTV Movie Awards (best actor, best actress, best fight scene… even Elizabeth Banks picked up a golden popcorn box for best on-screen transformation), that wasn’t enough to topple Twilight. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 took home the MTV Movie Award for best movie (and best kiss) despite losing most of the other major awards. Perhaps the shine is off the franchise for the MTV generation, but it still has brand power.
