The tendency is to dismiss lifeguards as a joke, thanks to people like Pam Anderson and the incredibly popular yet incredibly stupid show Baywatch, but in the real world, lifeguards are heroes. Water can be very dangerous, and the whole role of a lifeguard is to wade into the water and rescue helpless swimmers, which is why Tomas Lopez lost his job. That’s right, a lifeguard lost his job for saving a life; why did he get canned? Hero lifeguard Tomas Lopez was fired for leaving his beach area to safe someone’s life.
“I wasn’t going to say no,” said Lopez, a 21-year-old lifeguard who had been on the job four months prior to his firing. “I think it’s ridiculous, honestly, that a sign is what separates someone from being safe and not safe.”
While Susan Ellis, speaking for lifeguard service provider Jeff Ellis and Associates, says that liability issues are why Lopez was fired, he didn’t exactly abandon his job. Indeed, Lopez’s section of Hallandale Beach was covered by multiple other lifeguards before he left to go assist with keeping the injured swimmer alive until paramedics arrived. The swimmer is in critical condition at a local hospital; meanwhile, one of Lopez’s associates was so disgusted by the firing, he radioed his boss to cover the beach for him and quit on the spot.
