A crowded movie theater full of people eagerly awaiting the premier of the hottest new movie to come out of Hollywood since The Avengers. In the Denver suburb of Aurora, Colorado, what was supposed to be a night of harmless movie violence became a harrowing night of real-life violence as shooting broke out in a screening of The Dark Knight Rises at the Century 16 theater. At about 12:30, a masked gunman stormed into the crowded theater and opened fire, killing 14 people.
“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,” said police chief Dan Oates. “The shooting apparently went on for some time.”
The perpetrator was wearing a bullet-proof vest, a riot helmet, a gas mask or goggles, and black clothing. A man was arrested in a nearby parking lot with a handgun and rifle, and he told police he had explosives in his home. More weapons may have been left at the scene, where 50 people were injured during the violence and gas attack. A motive is not known, but police do not believe the man had any sort of terrorism ties.
